The Next Chapter Begins Here

In October 2025, the Buffalo Maritime Center’s volunteer-built replica of the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief completed its historic Bicentennial Voyage - exactly 200 years after the original boat reached New York City. Over 33 days, a rotating crew of more than 100 people traveled 500 miles from Buffalo to New York City, stopping at 28 ports and connecting with more than 30,000 New Yorkers along the canal. The voyage became more than just a commorative journey down the canal; it became a story of perseverance, hope, and human spirit.

In 2026, we’re building on that momentum.

While we continue working toward our long-term vision of a waterfront facility in downtown Buffalo, this year is about strengthening the programs, spaces, and experiences that define who we are and how we serve our community year-round. Your donation in 2026 will help us:

  • Prepare for the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief’s spring 2026 journey home and explore opportunities for a future statewide voyage
  • Expand our Virtual Voyage into a free, accessible digital learning resource for classrooms, families, and lifelong learners everywhere
  • Grow student training and workforce development through our Hand-to-Hand and Navigator programs
  • Upgrade our boatbuilding workshop to create a safer, more inspiring place to learn and build
  • Offer new community events, workshops, and exhibits that reconnect Buffalo to its waterways
  • Care for and operate our historic working fleet — Scajaquada, White Electra, O.K. Clark, and 1812 U.S.S. Trippe
